Step-by-step process (Stakeholder Grievance Process)

  • Step 1: Staff member
    The stakeholder must first attempt to resolve the concern directly with the employee involved.
  • Step 2: School administrator
    If unresolved, the grievance moves to the school principal or appropriate administrator.
  • Step 3: Superintendent
    If still unresolved, the matter is submitted to the Superintendent.
    The Superintendent provides a written decision within the timeline specified in the procedure.
  • Step 4: Board of Education hearing
    If the stakeholder is not satisfied with the Superintendent’s decision, they may request a Board hearing. The Board:

    • Determines whether the grievance meets criteria to be heard
    • May decline to hear matters outside its jurisdiction
    • If accepted, conducts a hearing
    • Issues a written decision
      This functions as the district’s formal School Act section 11 appeal mechanism.
  • Step 5: Provincial appeal
    If the matter qualifies under section 11.1 of the School Act, a further appeal may be made to the provincial Superintendent of Achievement.
